Description

Automotive tester for precise electrical current measurement with a range of 0 … 1000 A AC/DC and frequency measurement.
Compact design, ideal for immediate use, with an inrush current measurement feature.
25 mm wide clamp opening, available with optional ISO certification.

The automotive tester is a device used to accurately measure electrical currents. With a 25 mm clamp diameter and a measurement range of 0 … 1000 A AC/DC, this clamp meter can handle a wide range of measurement tasks. The current is measured inductively, eliminating the need to turn off the devices being tested. This allows for measuring current while the devices are in operation. The measured values are displayed numerically and graphically using a bar chart. The compact design of the clamp meter makes it easy to store in work bags.

The rise of electromobility has made it increasingly important to understand the current flow in electrical lines. The automotive tester can be used to monitor the primary and secondary sides of an electric vehicle’s wallbox. It is also useful in workshops for checking electric vehicles, allowing for the measurement of starting currents or on-board currents.

In addition to the standard measurement mode, the automotive tester can also measure inrush currents. This feature is particularly useful when starting up motors, such as ventilation systems, to identify any potential sources of error. The clamp meter also has a low-pass filter function, allowing for current measurements in the low frequency range. It can measure currents up to a frequency of 1 kHz. This feature is often used to measure the current of low-midrange speakers (woofers).

Automotive tester for EV measurements – unique features for electric and hybrid vehicles

The abbreviation EV stands for electric vehicle, which refers to vehicles powered by electricity. When measuring the electrical components in conventional and electric vehicles, it is important to have a current clamp that is suitable for direct current measurements and is compact and robust to fit in limited spaces.

Unlike conventional vehicles with combustion engines, electric vehicles require higher voltages and amperage to power additional electrical consumers. Electric and hybrid vehicles use different voltage levels, while conventional vehicles typically use a 12-volt (or 24-volt) battery to supply power to all consumers. Therefore, the current clamp used for electric and hybrid vehicles must accurately measure both low current levels, such as vehicle lighting and cockpit displays, as well as high current levels along the electric drive train.

Depending on the design of the automotive tester, the measurement results for direct current can be affected by previous magnetization and nearby lines. It is advantageous for the current clamp to automatically compensate for this with an offset check or have the ability to be set to zero before taking a DC measurement.

In electric vehicles, alternating current from the mains is converted into direct current to charge the batteries. The charging time depends on the charging station and the vehicle’s equipment. In order to measure the individual wires during the charging process, special adapters are available. These adapters allow the automotive tester to measure alternating current on the connected lines.
